Mississauga – Games of upset, surprise wins, unexpected display of tenacity to win the game, passion and the heart of a champion. These factors described the two weekends of championship games at PHYBA. The year of 2008 – 2009 season ends with full excitement and a and show of excellence for the purveyors of hoops. Once again, the Peel Halton Youth Basketball Association season could be characterized only in two words, exciting and excellent. It could be termed “The Spring Madness” as the teams who qualified to the championship, were all gunning for the championship trophy with all their might that they could muster. It was a show of force, strategies, passion and determi-nation and brute muscle in the hardcourt. It’s either you float or sink. All semifinalist teams in the nine division finally face each other to separate the winners and the contenders. Whoever is the weaker, will take the crumbs and the smarter and better would take the bacon home. That’s how the energies of winners and pizzle-off of losers could be felt in the air as games went to high gears. The Mosquito Division, the Mississauga Rebels surprised everyone , as diminutive players as they are, showed an excellent knowledge of basketball as they trounced the powerful ACEBA. The winning form of Ares Guerra plus the speedy Avan Nava mixed with other boys of Rolan Camacho made the right chemistry to trounce the regular season unbeatable team of ACEBA. In a 43-36 win by the REBELS, mostly with the leadership of Guerra, brought them the championship. With the silent style coaching of Roland Camacho brought the Rebels team, sponsored by Biophorm, to a 43-36 convincing victory over the ACEBA. The Tykes Division was a tad a disappointment for the BAYAN team who was beaten badly in a 72 – 40 in a powerful trouncing by MYBA Storm. This games was expected to be a tit-for-tat play for both teams but for some undetermined cause, the Bayan team , began to melt faster than a heated candle in the second half. In fairness ,the team tried to live up to the BAYAN name to no avail. Lopez boys was to powerful as they swept them to oblivion. The MYBA was too powerful as if signifying their teams’ name as they stormed their way to the championship crown in a wipe out score of 72 -40 over Bayan. .It was a battle of disappointments as Brian Lopez of MYBA Tykes, showed them how to coach a winning team. In a very convincing victory of the GRIZZLIES over Stallions in 50 – 37, showed how a powerful team work of a good centre combined with a good forward means championship. That’s the remedy by Coach Ronnie Palacay of Grizzlies. Never did the Stallions have the chance to overcome the powerful combinations of the Grizzlies as the Stallions tried to make adjustments but it’s too late as they were trounced badly from the beginning of the first half. Lito Monzons boys are very proud to make a landmark in this division. In the girls division, the Vaughan Girls outperformed the Milton Stags Maroons as they showed the amazing fastbreaks in their offence strategy. The Maroons couldn’t penetrate the defensive qualities of Vaughan Girls that led to a convincing score of 56 – 50 overwhelming the Milton girls. It’s a bit surprising that the Milton girls came close to Vaughan at the end as they put all their best. A little push probably could have made a different story. Coach Loy Mago of Vaughan, made all the upper towners happy specially Ferdie and Zomy. The Bantam Boys of Jim Gorospe and Ferdie Valentin made their point to the Ronald Baellos’ boys as they beat them convincingly in a close 76 -71 victory over CKATT. It was a tit-for- tat everytime, but the mix work of Ryan Abdul, Tyler Ennis and K. Ashiedo, made the difference to become a champion. It’s hardwork as CKATT’S center Yalung worked hard for control, but it takes a team to win. The Vaughan boys made an upset tone of victory in a close game. Probably a coaching will make the difference, but who knows a slight error in this kind of game will make or break to champions. The T.O. Falcons was ever ready in the Juvenile division knowing that they are facing a formidable CKATT team. In the regular season, the CKATT boys were the leader of the pack in this division, that an assurance of championship is almost given. They were unbeaten to the end. As they say the ball is round, much more the Falcons put their hearts out and play with their hearts too. A very clear example of showing undeterred determination , as a result, the victory cup is yours. The T.O. Falcons showed the CKATT how to play with your hearts’ in their quest for Juvenile Championship. Another unexpected outcome of a championship game was the victory of T.O. Falcons Midget division against FAAB. It was a game of heart and mind for coach Jun Aliwalas of Falcons as he guided systematically his team to the weak points of FAAB boys. Lots of power shots and stick ‘em defense rattled the Brampton boys to their detriment. Again another show of gotta hearts. Another year for FAAB Boys, another plan, as Falcon’s Juna Aliwalas and Nestor Leabres plans for the victory party. RJS Productions team of Jason Sunga worked hard to make a convincing first time victory over last yea champion Spartans. The 50 – 45 result is enough to make their point that working hard plus lucky shots can make a champion out of it. The RJS men started strong but pet-tered out in the second half but they recovered with their 1 -2 shots with the powerful help of centre Kevin Denis. The combination of Don Pow and Kevin made a big factor for the RJS being on the top. Meanwhile the expected showdown of Sunlife and Aristokrat Seniors came to a clash as both played out of guts and determination. Combined efforts of Sivio Cata, Jeffrey Perez and Arnold Castro put a dampen to the the Aristokrat Seniors, even with the gallant efforts of Bong Galang and Elmer Puno couldn’t pull out the restaurateurs to a winning edge. It was a tight game at most, but the everwhelming power od Sunlife prevailed. Another year, a good season It’s the Commitment, Fitness and FUN. This is PHYBA.
